History of the Omaha .NET User's Group video:
Philip Wolfe talks about how the Omaha .NET UG was started

Fellow .NET Users,

Hopefully many of you have had an opportunity to watch some of the sessions from the Microsoft //Build Conference. One of my favorite sessions from the conference was the session titled Demystifying Machine and Deep Learning for Developers (https://bit.ly/2x0MVQV), and there are SOO many more that are great. Based on the number of session topics, it looks like Microsoft will be making strong moves into Machine Learning, IoT and other “edge” computing (lookup Azure Sphere), and a lot more. Jump over to our Slack channel http://bit.ly/2DwVVvG and tell us what your favorite sessions were!

Speaking of our Slack channel, if you aren’t on there regularly you’ve been missing out on the discount code for the upcoming Nebraska Code conference (https://nebraskacode.amegala.com/). If you’re thinking about attending the conference, use the discount code “ODNUG”. Historically, this has been a great conference and for the first time ever, it will be taking place in the Omaha metro area! Make sure to jump on this!

Next week Tech Omaha is having a Happy Hour at the Slowdown from 5 till 9 PM Thursday June 7th. If you are interested in attending please RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2018-tech-omaha-happy-hour-tickets-45240617906

Okay, on with the monthly meeting announcements. This month’s .NET User’s Group meeting will take place on Thursday, May 31st, starting at 6:00 PM. Food and drinks will be provided by our sponsoring starting 15-20 minutes before the meeting.

Topic:
The World of Computer Vision

A subfield of Artificial Intelligence, and with plenty of overlap with Machine Learning, Computer Vision has been around since as early as the 1960s as a niche research field, but is now ubiquitous: face recognition, digital auto focus and HDR, augmented reality, QR code scanning, image recognition, surveillance system video analytics. In this talk we'll survey many CV techniques, how they work, and how they can be used to solve real problems. Then we'll deep dive into one or two specific applications, and see how you can design and build your own application-specific computer vision algorithms.

Speaker:
Joel Becker has been in the software development industry in Omaha for 10 years, with broad experiences in many languages (Scala being a current favorite) and technologies. Making video games drew him into programming at age ten, then in grad school, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, AI in general, captured his permanent interest. In 2016 he co-founded Percebe Music, building an AI-intensive app that evaluates the artisticness of a piano student's playing. and recently founded DevGlass for dynamic software development analysis, to fill the gaps of static code analysis. He currently contracts with Farm Credit Services of America. Joel also loves to compose music (most recently "A Peek into a Boson"), and spend time with his wife and four cute little kids.
