Small Steps, Big Impact: Unlocking Value Through Incremental Refactoring by Jake Esser, Nathan Ferrel
In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, many organizations are grappling with aging technology stacks and mounting technical debt that threaten agility, innovation, and competitiveness. The challenge is not just technological it’s deeply intertwined with business strategy and product evolution. This session explores how a thoughtful, incremental approach to refactoring can unlock significant value without the disruption of massive rewrites or high-risk transformation projects.
We'll examine how aligning business goals, product priorities, and technology strategy enables sustainable progress. By treating technical refactoring as a cross-functional effort rather than a purely engineering concern, FCSA has been able to improve system resilience and continuously deliver customer value.

Nathan Ferrel
Nathan is a Lead Application Developer at FCSA with 26 years of enterprise-level software development experience, which means he remembers when deploying meant copying locally compiled files to a shared drive and source control meant ZIP files and hope. For the past 15 years, he has called FCSA home, focusing on software architecture and the ongoing care and feeding of complex codebases. Nathan is passionate about moving the architecture needle in thoughtful, incremental ways. He believes in adding value with every step while keeping systems stable enough to sleep at night.
