Fellow .NET Users,

As September comes to a close, I wanted to take a few minutes of your time to recount some happy news in our community.

First, many of you know John (Mike) Haro who has been attending our meetings for longer than anyone I know. He's certainly been engaged with the user group longer than I have! I wanted to take a minute to congratulate Mike on his recent retirement from the workforce. He worked for many different organizations over the course of his long career starting with the US Air Force in 1973. He gained a lot of experience working for many diverse organizations over the years. Most of his career was spent consulting and I for one can vouch that this line of work can be challenging and intimidating. Somehow, he managed to stick with it for almost 30 years!

About 10 years ago, he volunteered to help Brian and I record the meetings after we had both failed at reliably getting it done. Ever since then, Mike has been a rock solid part of the group. I think he's probably attended more meetings than I have. Always behind the camera and in the background, he has humbly helped our group progress. He's never asked for or desired any acknowledgment. Our YouTube channel now has 107 videos on it. If you take that number divided by 11, which is the number of meeting in a year, you get almost 10 years of videos. If you've ever spent time recording and editing videos, you'll know the tremendous effort that Mike has given. What an amazing legacy to offer to our group.

Mike recently let me know that he also plans to retire from the work he's done for the Omaha .NET User's Group. Please join me congratulating Mike on a successful career and thanking him for the uncountable hours he has volunteered to the Omaha .NET User's group to make it better for all of us! I don't want to publish his personal email here, but you can contact him either on LinkedIn or on our Slack channel. I hope each and every one of you will take a minute to say thanks!

Second, I'm sure you all know Brian Olson. Personally, I first met him when he volunteered to give his first .NET User's Group presentation somewhere in the 2010 timeframe. At the time, Brian Swiger had recently stepped down as the co-leader of the group as he prepared to move to Florida. I was looking for someone to help which led me to ask Brian O if he would be willing to take a leadership role in our group. Thankfully, Brian agreed and he has been an amazing partner in the vision of improving the .NET Software Development landscape in Omaha ever since. Brian was recently engaged to be married and took the leap over the weekend. Please take a minute to let Brian know how much you appreciate his efforts and congratulation him and his new wife, Dana, on their recent marriage!

Oh, and after all of that, we have a meeting coming up! The next meeting will take place on Thursday, September 26th, starting at 6:00 PM. Food and drinks will be provided by our sponsor 15-20 minute before the meeting begins. Stick around until the end of the meeting when Akkodis will give away some prizes to those in attendance.

Topic:
The Six Tenets of Modern Software Engineering by Jim Kudirka

Our job as software engineers is to design and build loosely coupled, highly cohesive, logically consistent, service-oriented software systems that are extensible, testable, and maintainable. However, not everyone on the team knows exactly what this looks like. In this session we will walk through each of these six tenets of modern software engineering and explain how our architecture, our code abstractions, structure, and implementations make all of these a reality in our software.

Speakers:
