Omaha .NET User Group October Meeting
Fellow .NET Users,
There have been a couple interesting posts to our Slack workspace lately regarding news focusing on Microsoft. First, the death of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is a sad turn of events. I didn't know much about him before his passing, but after reading up a bit, he seemed like a genuinely good man. Also, Microsoft has decided to give the Open Invention Network group access to its 60,000 patents. The goal of this group is to protect Linux and other open source projects from lawsuits. This is a big deal and basically proves that Microsoft is a very different company than it used to be.
This month’s .NET User’s Group meeting will take place on Thursday, October 25th, starting at 6:00 PM. Food and drink will be served by our sponsor starting 15-20 minutes before the meeting.

Doug Durham is the CTO of Don’t Panic Labs, which helps companies innovate through the design and development of software technologies. He is also the co-founder of Nebraska Global, DPL’s parent company, known as a pioneer in the startup landscape in Nebraska.
Doug has nearly 30 years of software engineering and development experience in aerospace and defense, healthcare, manufacturing, ecommerce, consumer web applications, and internet network services. He is passionate about the process of solving problems through software, and the application of sound engineering principles and patterns to these efforts.
His diverse skills, education, and various leadership roles have shaped his career. Doug served as a Civil Engineer in the Air National Guard for 21 years, which deployed him to many strange and wonderful places around the world, before he retired at the rank of Major.
Doug is a proud Husker and received an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where two of his three children are also pursuing engineering degrees. He has taught at the UNL Raikes School of Computer Science, and serves on a College of Engineering advisory board. He also has a master’s degree in Finance and Management.
A native Nebraskan, Doug lives with his wife Shana in Lincoln.

An introduction to the Azure Service Fabric programming model.
Microsoft’s Azure Service Fabric is the PaaS (platform-as-a-service) offering for service-oriented systems that Microsoft made available to the general public in March 2016. Since it is a platform (as opposed to raw infrastructure), it represents a programming model that likely differs from the traditional experiences we have seen and used. In this overview, I will provide an introduction to what it will be like to develop applications that target the Service Fabric and share some ideas on how to retain the more traditional (and comfortable) build/debug experience while still taking full advantage of the Service Fabric SDK and platform. This talk will be a mix of Service Fabric concepts discussion as well as some actual demos of the programming experience.
